Addressing and packaging - General guidelines
Universal Postal Union advice
On outward international items, the name of the destination country must always be included:
- On the last line of address.
- In capital letters.
- Preferably in the language of the despatching country or in an internationally recognized language.

Address formats for Western Europe
To help facilitate customs clearance, it is recommended that you provide recipient contact details (email address and/or phone number) so that recipients are contactable if any information is missing or incorrect. Contact details should be provided within the electronic customs data or in the case of a CN23 on the physical declaration. To ensure this information is protected do not write these contact details separately on the outside item.

Customs duties and taxes
Goods up to £270 require customs label CN22. This form must be signed by the sender and attached to the top left hand corner of the item. The sender’s full name and address must be written on the front of the item. Goods over £270 require customs declaration CN23 + adhesive plastic wallet SP 126.

Prohibitions and restrictions vary from country to country, and can sometimes apply to items which you may think are ordinary. Prohibited items
Prohibited products are not permitted in the mail under any circumstances.
In addition to the prohibited articles listed under article 15 of the Universal Postal Convention (Bucharest 2004), the following items are also banned from entry to Singapore:
- Lithium batteries and equipment containing lithium batteries
- Prohibited liquors*
- Prohibited cigarettes*
* The intoxicating liquors and cigarettes must not be marked with the words "SINGAPORE DUTY NOT PAID" or "SDNP" on the labels, cartons or packets. Cigarettes with the prefix "E" printed on the packets may not be brought into Singapore either.
- Chewing gum
- Chewing tobacco and imitation tobacco products
- Cigarette lighters of pistol or revolver shape
- Controlled drugs and psychotropic substances
- Arms, firearms or parts of firearms or any other lethal barrelled weapons of any description from which any shot, bullet or other missile can be discharged or which can be adapted for the discharge of any such shot, bullet or missile or any weapons of whatever description designed or adopted for the discharge of any noxious liquid, gas or other thing or any component part of any weapon
- Firecrackers
- Machine-skimmed or hand-skimmed milk
- Any article consisting of or containing any public lottery ticket or any advertisement of prizes or any other announcement relating to any public lottery, sweepstakes or other gambling transaction
- Obscene articles, publications, video tapes/discs and software.
- Reproduction of copyright publications, video tapes, video compact discs, laser discs, records or cassettes.
- Seditious and treasonable materials
